    Hi!

I wanted to open a discussion upon references and ideas on the usage of the regiment of arquebusiers in battle. I'm going to start explaining what we got so far about tactics with in the regiment and I would like to hear your opinions about how can it be better used in conjunction with the maneuvers of the landsknecht formation.

Some notes upon what we learned about those weapons from previous experience. When shooting them all together into a formation they have a range of 10 to 15 meters or so, though the accuracy it's poor, the number of targets balances the chances. For one single shoot to be effective against a single enemy needs to be done 5 meters or less from the target, meaning that we need to expose ourselves quite a lot and that usually we have no more than one shoot against a charging enemy. Also once we get into close combat we are basically doomed because of the length and the weight of the arquebus, we can not defend ourselves while holding it. For all this usually we keep ourselves in movement quite a lot during the battle, approaching an enemy shooting them and withdrawing to more secure positions.

So, we are specting to be 12, which makes quite a good number for a formation with an arrangement of 3x4. This gives us the chance of doing some basic actions

    - Caracola or shoot by ranks

The most historical one :). This would be what we have in mind as our basic shoot procedure since we don't need to change the configuration of the formation at all. It will allow us to have a continuous cadence while soothing of 3 rounds each 7 seconds or so and it can be done advancing, withdrawing or steady.

    - Double the lines

For when we want to give it everything to the enemy. First line will kneel down or the second line will shoot over the first line shoulders, we will see what works better. looking forward to use this one ^^.

    - Large front

Will use it when we want to cover a large area, for instance standing in front of the Landsknecht's main formation if we want to chip a enemy steady block before engaging.

In regard to our position towards the main regiment I figured that the historical formation might have been as such for a reason ;D.

We see ourselves fighting attached to the sides of the main formation specially in the corners so we can protect the flanks keeping the enemy cautious of coming to close and withdraw when needed.

Also we tried last year with out much success the passing through the ranks of the main formation. I think it was an excellent idea that got us completely unprepared XD, If we thing it through a bit I'm sure we can make it work for next year.

And that's all, send me your thoughts guys and please if you have any ideas or historical references or such let me know :D!

    Cheers!

Jari and Seegras: I may consider to get mine with modern sole XD, specially knowing how sleepery gets the ground in the wonderful weather during Drachenfest ;D

    Lenchen: Any time :)

I will like to open a topic in the forum for discussing tactics, exercises, formations etc from early 16 century handguners. I got quite a lot of information but may there will be someone who will be able to add to it. 'm really interested in getting it right fo the group :). It's there any specific section of the forum where it would fit better?

Seegras: Thanks for the feedback :)

Jari: The Kuhmaulschuhe from that shop seem really affordable, will need to fix the sole afterwards though or I will see my ass falling all the time XD

    Fritz: thanks!

WentzelSaltzkrust: Hey man, thanks! we will try our best :). It's a pity that we can't join this year, but a good friend of all of us get's married the very same weekend of the Drachenfest, the basterd XD.

Michael: Awesome ^^ thanks! We are looking forward to it.

Stephan: Me too dude :). Damn now besides learning properly the Tercio song I will need to learn a LK song just to catch you up XD

    Lyrah: Thanks ^^

We have already some question rewarding shoes. Got a couple of options we would like to check with you guys, so we can start gathering the equipment. Those are currently being offered by in betwen 40 and 60 euros in a spanish website and they would be a perfect option for the people from the unit with less means, shorting the ones that definitely would not be acceptable in the camp would help us a lot :). I'm aware that the pure LK shoe is desirable, although some people would like to invested in something a bit more versatile costume wise.

Those were the options we were looking in to:

My name is Iosu Palacios (32) and I’m a Spaniard currently living in Bremen. I came to Germany for the first time in 2011 to take part in the Drachenfest where I founded the Tercio in the blue camp. Since the very beginning I looked to you guys with wonder and not little amount of envy. So much so that in 2014 me and another friend got made couple of Landsknchet outfits to join you in a couple of battles. It was fun fighting near you the previous years but fighting with in the formation was such a unique experience. We enjoy all of it. Every. Single. Moment.

In 2015 we came to Drachenfest with some new weapons we were really excited to show you. Sadly, the lack of time for preparations and some other issues made it impossible to apply to your camp, so we joined the Silver camp with other Spaniards. Somehow though we manage to get some gigs with you people that made our day that year.

(If somebody here got hit by a round wee shoot in to you in the last battle we are really sorry ;D, you could call it aggressive marketing if you will XD)

So enough introduction, now I’m going to remove your collective cock out of my mouth and stand up again. Let’s get to busyness.

We want to apply to the camp for 2017 so, with your help, one year should give us the buffer time to set ready our Landsknecht group up to your standards.

I would like to start with the things that we already have: The weapons.

We want to play an arquebus regiment. Though in 2015 the system worked beautifully (these arquebuses actually shoot a foam bullet up to 10 meters and have a reload ratio of about 20-30 seg per shoot) there was A LOT of room for improvement towards the looks.

That’s what we did this year and you can see the result here.

    And a video of performance

Additionally, we got those little ones that we call hand cannons. As you will see in the video bellow they are quite devastating in close range, and a good fun to use ;D.

We got currently 7 arquebuses ready to go and a couple of hand cannons which bring me to the next topic, the size of the regiment and the concept.

Since there is still one year to go we don’t know for sure how many people we may have with us but I would say a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 20 aprox. We have half a dozen halberds as well, so most certainly either we can join at night actions with those (the arquebuses are useless at night) or have the extra people using them in combination with the arquebuses (that we could discuss later in the thread)

The concept of the group would be in short a “penal regiment”. Originally the group was formed by soldiers that where convicted as rowers in a Spanish galley. The ship wrecked after a difficult combat with the Turks and the convicts took over the crew. Without the option of going back to Spain where they will certainly have got hanged, they resolved to take their chances somewhere else. With the clothes, weapons and supplies of the ship their appearance was that from real Spanish soldiers, so they took advantage out of it and they started to sell their services to local lords.

The mercenary business is a profitable one and nowadays the regiment it’s known as the Gallows Birds and it’s already a solid regiment of arquebusiers. New recruits are added to the original bunch as long as they can probe (usually through penitentiary tattoos) that they have been in prison, no questions asked about their story. Actually If you dare to ask there is not a single one of them that went to prison upon their own sins, conspiracies, scams and bad luck, among others will be the arguments they will come with about their current situation.

Key features would be a XIII tattooed in the forehead among other penitentiary tattoos.

We won't accept only Spaniards, it's quite sure that some German friends will join.

Regarding the clothes I wanted to show you some references. They resemble quite well what we are aiming for as a group towards equipment and costume. We will still keep in mind in all time your style guides of course :).

This one is basically what we are using as a main source of inspiration, for the basics.

    And some historical sources

And that's basically the project for next year. We are really looking forward to read your thoughts on it and work with you so we can be up to the test ;)

    Viele Grüße!
